The Town of Hanover Parks & Recreation Department is offering a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) opportunity for individuals interested in developing leadership skills while gaining hands-on experience working with youth. This structured volunteer role is designed for those who want to learn from experienced camp staff, build responsibility, and explore future employment opportunities in recreation, education, or youth development.
Camp Schedule
Mandatory Staff Training: June 18 – June 23
Camp Session: June 24 – July 31 (8:30 AM – 12:30 PM OR 12:30PM-4:30 PM Shift)
Optional Extended Weeks: August 3 – August 14
CITs must be available for all assigned training and scheduled camp days.
Position Summary
The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) is an unpaid volunteer leadership development role within Hanover Parks & Recreation’s Summer Camp program. CITs work under direct supervision to assist Lead Counselors and Camp Counselors in providing a safe, organized, and inclusive camp environment. This position focuses on skill-building, mentorship, and experiential learning.
Major Responsibilities
Assist Lead Counselors and Camp Counselors with supervision of assigned camper groups
Support daily activity setup, participation, and clean-up
Model positive behavior and professionalism for campers
Help maintain accurate attendance and participant counts
Follow all camp policies, behavioral expectations, and safety procedures
Assist with on-site activities and field trips
Communicate questions or concerns to supervising staff
Maintain a clean, safe, and inclusive camp environment
Perform related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Must meet New Hampshire volunteer requirements
Must be at least a freshman in High School
Interest in working with children in a camp or recreational setting
Commitment to full training and assigned camp schedule
