About the team and position
Join Carvana’s Legal Department in the role of Counsel, Consumer Finance. Carvana is looking for an attorney to provide legal and regulatory support for Carvana’s automotive consumer finance, payments, and other consumer-facing financial services activities, including technology driven financial services and fintech business models.
This role will report directly to the Senior Counsel, Consumer Finance, and will work closely with other members of the Legal and Compliance teams. The position is business-embedded and involves close collaboration with compliance, product, payments, operations, and other legal teams. Direct experience in automotive finance is helpful but not required. Backgrounds involving consumer finance, consumer protection, servicing, payments, or other high-volume consumer financial matters translate well to this role.
What you’ll be doing
• Develop a mastery of Carvana business processes and systems. Provide counsel to Carvana stakeholders, in partnership with senior members of the Legal team, on requirements related to the sale of automobiles, consumer protection, consumer lending, payments, and servicing.
• Provide timely, concise and business-focused legal advice on consumer financial services, payments, and fintech laws and regulations ( e.g. TILA, UDAAP, FCRA, Regulations Z, E, and NACHA rules).
• Conduct comprehensive research and analysis, and synthesize that information into a clear interpretation of consumer finance state and federal laws and regulations.
• Advise on regulatory risk arising from consumer-facing operations, escalating novel or high-risk issues as appropriate, including issues that surface through consumer complaints, disputes, or government inquiries.
• Stay up to date on new and changing developments in applicable legal and regulatory requirements and lead the communication of relevant changes to the Compliance Team and Carvana legal and business stakeholders.
• Present guidance in a digestible format to all levels of business partners and stakeholders, including in response to operational questions in your practice area.
• Partner with other legal professionals to provide specialized, innovative, joint guidance involving new and existing Carvana consumer lending business ventures.
• Leverage AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency, issue spotting, pattern recognition across consumer issues, and consistency in legal analysis.
• Manage and execute on projects and other deliverables as assigned by Legal Team leadership.
• Other duties as assigned.
What you should know/have
The successful candidate is a self-starter and team oriented. Candidates with experience advising, or interest in advising, technology-driven financial services or fintech businesses are a strong fit for this role. They are detail oriented, practical, and comfortable with ambiguity while managing multiple high-priority projects at once. This position requires an understanding of Carvana’s business goals and how the Legal Team’s efforts, delivered in partnership with senior counsel, can support those goals, while helping manage regulatory and legal risk. This position requires frequent interaction with Carvana’s diverse legal and business teams and requires clear communication that presents complex information in a concise and easy-to-understand manner.
We also look for:
• A JD and membership in good standing with a United States Bar.
• 5-7 years of experience providing legal support to sophisticated businesses, including experience or exposure to consumer finance, consumer protection, consumer lending, payments, servicing, regulatory enforcement, or related consumer-facing matters.
• Experience at a national law firm, in-house, or combination of both.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills.
• Superior research skills and ability to condense complex consumer finance issues into concise and easily understandable summaries.
• Comfort using modern legal research platforms and enthusiasm for responsibly leveraging AI-based legal tools.
• Enthusiasm and commitment to leadership within the Legal Team and collaboration across stakeholder relationships.
• Experience influencing others to take action.
• Experience interacting with and working directly with/for internal/external business partners.
We’d be thrilled if you also have
• Substantive experience with state/federal auto dealer regulations and best practices.
• Consumer loan servicing experience, including a significant understanding of the complex dynamic of master servicing and subservicing.
• Project management experience.
• Experience defining and implementing process improvements.
What we’ll offer in return
• Full-Time Salary Position with a competitive salary.
• Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits.
• 401(K) with company match.
• A multitude of perks including student loan payments, discounts on vehicles, benefits for your pets, and much more.
• A great wellness program to keep you healthy and happy both physically and mentally.
• Access to opportunities to expand your skill set and share your knowledge with others across the organization.
• A company culture of promotions from within, with a start-up atmosphere allowing for varied career development.
