The Opportunity
DeNova is seeking a Controller to join its growing team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Reporting to the CFO, this role will own and execute DeNova’s core accounting and financial reporting function at an important stage in the company’s development.
This is a hands-on role for an experienced finance professional who brings strong technical accounting capability, sound judgment, and a practical approach to building structure in an evolving environment. The Controller will play a central role in ensuring DeNova’s financial information is accurate, timely, and reliable, while strengthening the controls, reporting discipline, and accounting processes needed to support DeNova’s next stage of growth. As DeNova scales, this role is expected to expand in scope and leadership, including building and leading the accounting function over time.

Core Responsibilities
Own monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate preparation of financial statements, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
Provide technical accounting guidance for routine and non-routine transactions, supporting the appropriate application of accounting standards.
Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and coordinate audit activities; manage tax compliance in partnership with external advisors.
Manage financial reporting requirements for government grants and non-dilutive funding, including applications, claims, schedules, and audit support.
Help establish, document, and maintain fit-for-purpose accounting policies and internal controls as the company scales.
Oversee third-party bookkeeping support and help build toward an internal function.
Identify opportunities to streamline and improve accounting and reporting workflows.
Contribute to a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
Help shape the finance team structure, including future hiring and team leadership as the company grows.
Required Qualifications
CPA designation with 7-10+ years of progressive post-qualification experience
Strong technical accounting capability, ideally supported by a background in public accounting and audit
Experience managing end-to-end accounting operations
Proven track record leading monthly and annual close processes
Clear communication skills and the ability to explain complex accounting issues practically
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and professional judgment
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in a growth-stage, scaling, or early commercial company environment
Familiarity with government grant reporting (e.g., IRAP, ACOA, or similar programs)
Track record of strengthening controls, workflows, or reporting processes
Ability to work effectively with external auditors and tax advisors
Exposure to biotech, manufacturing, or life sciences industries
Experience with ERP implementation or accounting systems improvement
Work Location
This role is based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and requires regular onsite work.

Base Salary Range
$100,000 - $135,000
