Position Status: Full-Time (40 hrs per week) Permanent
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is recruiting for a full-time Consultation Historical Research Manager to oversee the Consultation Department Research & Engagement team's work of historical research on Métis communities in Alberta. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Consultation – Research and Engagement, the Consultation Historical Research Manager will lead the team in research using primary resources and knowledge (i.e., Métis scrip records, birth/death/marriage records, community knowledge, etc.) to establish historical narratives of the Métis Nation within Alberta in support of the advancement and protection of Métis rights. Responsibilities include securing funding agreements, administering research programs, and building and maintaining relationships with relevant research partners. The successful candidate will engage meaningfully with Métis citizens and stakeholders, bring an open-minded and solutions-oriented approach, and have the ability to identify innovative opportunities that advance the priorities of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee the work of historical research on Métis communities in Alberta, including identifying research gaps and building on existing research.
Conduct field work or off-site work that supports the collection of Métis Traditional Knowledge.
Identify, apply for, manage, and report on grant-funded programs that support the Research & Engagement team within the Consultation Department.
Manage budgets, deliverables, and resources to meet obligations under funding agreements.
Develop, refine, and make recommendations on both internal and external policies and processes related to repatriation.
Develop materials such as reports, briefings, and presentations related to research activities and Consultation Department programs.
Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as Citizens, governments, funders, museums, and other research bodies to support historical research.
Maintain a high level of political awareness, cultural sensitivity, professionalism, and confidentiality in interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
Manage staffing responsibilities and perform supervisory duties including hiring and training staff, assigning job duties, and developing and overseeing staff work plans.
Provide effective leadership and mentor team members through feedback, coaching, and formal evaluations.
Train new researchers on conducting Métis-specific historical research.
Work collaboratively as part of the broader Otipemisiwak Métis Government Consultation Team.
Other tasks as required or assigned.

Strong computer skills with aptitude for using a wide range of software.

Ability to work under pressure, handle tense and stressful situations, and respond quickly in a dynamic and changing environment.
Self-starter with the ability to work independently or in a team setting.
Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture is an asset.
Qualifications
Post-secondary degree in Indigenous Studies, History, Anthropology, Political Science, or a related field is required.
A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a management or supervisory role.
A minimum of four (4) years’ experience in a similar role.
Experience working in Métis-specific historical research is an asset.
Experience working in government/on government policies is an asset.
Experience working with Indigenous or Métis communities is a strong asset.
Other Requirements
Ability to work in-office in Edmonton, AB.
Ability to work a regular schedule of Monday to Friday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, as well as occasional evenings and weekends is required.
Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
Travel within Alberta is a requirement. Additional, less frequent, out-of-province travel may also occur, with notice.
