Role Description
We are currently seeking a Computational Food Scientist to join our data-driven Bioinformatics team in Athens or Thessaloniki. The position is open to mid level candidates but we will consider outstanding candidates at any level.
In this role, you will combine strong computational skills, quantitative skills, and food science or food engineering domain expertise to design innovative AI/ML solutions for SaaS tools and client projects. You will be collaborating with cross-functional teams and interacting with clients to drive food/nutrition, biological, and health insights from concept to delivery in a face-paced environment.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with Bioinformaticians, Engineers, Data Scientists, and Product Managers to define requirements, timelines, and drive successful end-to-end delivery.
Own and lead internal and client-focused computational life science projects, from problem definition and experimental design to analysis, interpretation, and final delivery.
Translate engineering, scientific, or business objectives into well-structured computational and analytical workflows.
Analyze and interpret diverse foodomics datasets (DNA sequences, protein sequences/structures, chemical structures & bioassays, nutrition, sensory, formulation, food manufacturing, etc.) using scalable computational and AI/ML approaches.
Read, assimilate, analyze, and integrate research from diverse fields to create novel solutions and tools.
Create clear and effective visualizations, reports, and presentations to communicate results and insights to internal teams and external stakeholders.
Participate in client-facing discussions, helping understand needs, propose analytical solutions, and translate requirements into technical specifications.
Document methodologies, processes, results, and best practices to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and efficiency.
Continuously evaluate and improve models, workflows, and pipelines to enhance performance, accuracy, and scalability.
Provide food science/nutrition subject matter expertise for complex analyses, contributing to team growth through knowledge sharing.
Basic qualifications
MSc in Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, Nutrition, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computational Chemistry, Biostatistics, or other Food Science-related field.
At least 2 years of industry experience solving scientific and technical challenges to achieve business objectives for food and nutrition.
Strong proficiency in one or more scripting languages (Python and/or R).
Familiarity with Linux environments, shell scripting, and High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructures.
Familiarity with version control and developing code in a team environment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in Greek and English.
Preferred qualifications
PhD in Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, or other Food Science-related field.
At least 4 years of industry experience leading and owning projects and initiatives in Food & Beverage, Pharma/Health, Life Sciences, Biotech, or Process Engineering sectors.
Experience analyzing Next Generation Sequencing data (RNA-Seq, DNA-Seq, metagenomics, etc.) and other relevant omics-related datasets.
Experience applying statistics, chemistry, molecular biology, and AI & machine learning concepts.
Domain expertise in food engineering, nutrition, nutraceuticals, microbiome, or applied life sciences.
Highly organized, able to manage multiple priorities effectively, and adapt quickly.
Experience applying Agile project management strategies to prioritize and drive projects forward.
