POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a College Cook to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance the meal planning and preparation for the college students. 

Under the direction of the Culinary and Food Program Services Lead, the College Cook provides nutritional meals to college students including breakfast and lunch prepared in accordance with current health, safety and hygiene legislation. The College Cook will also be required to assist in packaging food for both retail and storage purposes.

This is a part time role and the hours will be 8-2:30 Monday to Friday. 

Plan and prepare meals under the direction of the Culinary and Food Program Services Lead. 

Order food supplies and equipment once they have been pre-approved by the Culinary Lead.

Work in conjunction with the Culinary and Food Program Services Lead to prepare monthly food menus.

Provide a well-balanced nutritional service, considering dietary/allergy needs and specific dietary requests (i.e.: vegetarian/vegan etc.)

Ensure that the food is ready at the required times and in sufficient quantities.

Keep daily records of meals served and take inventory of supplies and equipment.

Prepare breakfast and lunch for all college students including lunches when students are off site.

Ensure that the daily menu is communicated to all students/staff – including any ingredients that may cause allergic reactions (i.e.: soya, nuts etc.)

May be required to purchase food items for the college from the designated grocery store.

Respect and abide by the line of authority as established by the Employer.

Ensure compliance with Food Safety and Health & Safety Regulations.

Ensure that stock is rotated correctly (i.e.: First In, First Out) - to prevent food from becoming out of date. Check expiration dates on a regular basis. 

Check deliveries to ensure that the orders are correct and conform to the necessary quality. Also, to ensure that any errors are reported immediately and rectified.

Ensure that all food temperature charts are completed daily (delivery, fridge & freezer, core cooking, hot holding, cooling etc.)

Ensure that food wastage is minimized, and a record kept of all food wastage.

Maintain a high standard of cleanliness within the kitchen and all dining areas. Ensure that the required disinfection takes place regularly.

Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.

Working / Special Conditions

Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every f ive years.

Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.

Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to safe and reliable transportation, insured for community-based use, to effectively pick up groceries as needed.

WHAT YOU BRING

Education or training in food service/dietary management, culinary arts or a related area is an asset. Other forms of post-secondary education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, will be considered.

At least 2 years of relevant experience working within Indigenous communities, focusing on preparation of food.

Knowledge of good dietary practice and nutritional options.

Knowledge of principles, tools, and techniques of food service management, including planning and purchasing supplies.

Knowledge of general principles of menu planning, modification of recipes, preparation of foods, and appropriate food cooking temperatures.

Knowledge of inventory control procedures, procurement and storing of food items and supplies.

Ability to lift/unload food and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.

Ability to operate kitchen equipment safely and as per manufacturer’s instructions.

Preferred:

Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.

Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.

Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.

Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.

Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.

Reports to: College Administrator
