CNC Manufacturing Programmer – Sheet Metal
Location: Newport News, VA
Shift: Day Shift (1st Shift)
Schedule: Monday–Friday, with overtime available
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Pay: Starting at $25.00+/hour (based on experience)
Overview of the Role
We are hiring a CNC Manufacturing Programmer to support high-volume sheet metal production. This position is responsible for creating and maintaining machine programs, ensuring accuracy of technical data, and helping drive efficient fabrication processes. The role works closely with engineering and production teams to translate design concepts into reliable manufacturing instructions.
Work Setting:
• Long-standing manufacturing operation with extensive industry experience
• Modern facility (approximately 60,000 sq. ft.)
• Fast-paced production environment focused on precision components and complex assemblies
• Collaborative team culture with an emphasis on quality and delivery performance
Key Responsibilities:
• Review work orders, blueprints, and GD&T requirements to develop accurate CNC programs
• Write, edit, and maintain programs using G-code and CAM software
• Create flat patterns and layouts for sheet metal parts
• Work alongside engineering teams to ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability
• Support reverse engineering efforts when required for production needs
• Determine appropriate machines, tooling, and materials to maximize efficiency and control costs
• Apply knowledge of bend allowances, deductions, and fabrication methods
• Prepare setup documentation, including work instructions and assembly details
• Coordinate with quality teams to ensure adherence to ISO 9001 standards and customer specifications
Required Qualifications:
• Minimum of 5 years of CNC programming experience
• Strong ability to write and modify G-code
• Experience with CAM software such as SolidWorks, TekSoft, or comparable systems
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and blueprints accurately
• Solid understanding of math concepts, including geometry and trigonometry
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Knowledge of tooling selection and management practices
• High level of precision and attention to detail
Preferred Background:
• Experience in sheet metal fabrication environments
• Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality systems
• Exposure to process improvement initiatives
• Experience with inventory or materials coordination
Equipment Exposure:
• CNC turret punch presses with automatic tool changers
• Fiber laser cutting systems, including high-powered equipment
• Laser cutting machinery
• Combination punch/laser fabrication systems
