The role

The Clinical Midwifery Specialist level 2 (CMS2) coordinates and delivers high quality Midwifery care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, women having an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander baby and their families.

The Malabar Midwifery Service is a Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) providing collaborative midwifery services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their families with individualised continuity of care through pregnancy, labour and the early postnatal period. The service is designed to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal women and their families. In addition, the service links strongly with existing community support networks and other relevant agencies in order to enhance outcomes. Malabar MGP prioritises women or babies who will identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander to this model of care. Non-Indigenous women who live in the postcodes 2035-2036 may be able to access this model of care.

The CMS2 will work in a caseload model with the authority, responsibility and accountability for the achievement of quality care and outcomes for allocated women. The role includes working in partnership multidisciplinary team including the Aboriginal Health Worker and other partner health disciplines as required. The CMS2 must demonstrate a broad range of midwifery skills and knowledge at an advanced level to provide care relevant to the woman's needs across the continuum of pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period and be involved in planning/coordinating and implementing care for a group of women, as well as providing support and preceptorship to other staff.

The CMS2 will actively participate in continuous service development, evaluation and improvement. The position will involve work primarily in the identified geographical area, requiring the CMS2 to undertake associated travel. Mileage reimbursement is applicable to this position as the CMS2 must be willing to use own car for periods of time. Malabar MGP midwives work within the Annualised Salary Agreement for Midwifery Group Practice.

Selection Criteria

Understanding and knowledge in engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their families with an understanding of broader Aboriginal health issues including medical, physical, social and emotional issues in Aboriginal and Maternal infant health.
Current registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA) and current NSW Driver's License
Holding a relevant post-registration qualification and at least 3 years' experience working in the clinical area of the specified post-graduate qualification, or such other qualifications or equivalent experience deemed appropriate.
Demonstrates an ability to be self directed, innovative and motivated in addition to excellent communication and conflict resolution skills within both small and large teams.
Demonstrates extended autonomy of decision making whilst also acknowledging the importance of collaboration, communication and advocacy.
Demonstrates an understanding and knowledge of continuity of carer/primary health care models of midwifery care in addition to an explicit understanding of strengths based philosophy.
Demonstrates accountability, competence, proficiency and responsibility for own midwifery practice related to antenatal care, labour and delivery, postnatal care, lactation and infant feeding consistent with the AN&MC competency standards for midwives and the NSW Health Breastfeeding Policy and the BFHI Principles.
