Required Skills
Job Description
More than numbers. This is how projects get built.
Most estimators price work.
This role helps decide what gets built.
You will be working on projects that challenge how civil construction actually gets built.
In this role, you will help price and win complex work across the western United States, including highways, infrastructure, reclamation, and large scale earthworks, with exposure to mining and resource sector projects. The position is based in Missoula, Montana, with flexibility to work remotely in the short term.
This role is built around pricing work the way it actually gets constructed. You will be supported with real production data, strong field input, and a team that takes estimating seriously.
Your input will carry weight, and your estimates will directly influence what we pursue and how we execute it.
What you will get to do
You will turn complex civil construction projects into clear, executable estimates that set the job up for success.
Build estimates based on real production rates for labour, equipment, and crews so the work can actually be delivered in the field
Review drawings, specifications, and contract documents to define scope, identify risk, and develop accurate pricing
Quantify earthworks, underground utilities, roadbuilding, and infrastructure scopes with precision
Work with subcontractors and suppliers to strengthen pricing and improve competitiveness
Contribute to bid strategy by helping determine which projects we pursue and how we position them
Build estimate breakdowns, bid summaries, and supporting documentation for internal reviews
Work directly with project managers and field teams to ensure estimates reflect real world execution
Continuously improve cost history, production data, and estimating systems
Project types and scope
You will be involved in estimating heavy civil construction and infrastructure projects including earthworks, highways, underground utilities, mine support, and reclamation.
Some projects may involve mine support infrastructure, resource related earthworks, and reclamation work in active or remote environments.
Projects are often located in logistically complex settings where sequencing, access, and production planning are critical to success.
Who this role is built for
You understand heavy civil construction because you have priced it and seen how it gets built.
You are comfortable working through production rates, logistics, and risk rather than relying on surface level numbers.
You take ownership of your estimates and stand behind your work.
Your experience includes:
3 plus years estimating heavy civil construction, infrastructure, or mining related projects
Strong understanding of earthworks, excavation, utilities, roadbuilding, or similar civil scopes
Experience with production based estimating including labour, equipment, and crew builds
Proficiency with Excel, takeoff software, and estimating platforms
Working knowledge of construction safety standards and regulatory requirements including OSHA
Experience reviewing drawings, specifications, and contract documents
Preferred experience
Experience working with US DOT, state, or federal infrastructure projects
Experience working across multiple jurisdictions or varying specifications
Experience in mining, mine support, or heavy earthworks environments
Experience in design build or alternative delivery projects
Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
What you will get in return
Direct involvement in bid strategy and project selection
A strong pipeline of technically challenging civil construction work
Collaboration with experienced estimators, project managers, and field leaders
Competitive salary with health, dental, vision, and 401k program
Opportunity to grow with a company expanding into new markets and larger projects
Why people move into this role
Many estimators leave roles where they are disconnected from the field, working with poor data, or bidding everything instead of the right work.
This role is built to be the opposite.
You will work with real information, contribute to real decisions, and help win projects that your team will successfully deliver.
