Job Description

The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of children and families through child welfare and juvenile justice services and community supports. ACS manages community-based supports and foster care services and provides subsidized childcare vouchers. ACS child protection staff respond to allegations of child maltreatment. In juvenile justice, ACS oversees detention, placement, and programs for youth in the community.

ACS’ Division of Child and Family Well-being (CFWB) works to ensure critical supports to families and children and is rooted in the belief that all New Yorkers should have health resources, and educational, cultural, and social opportunities that support their capacity to thrive. Through the Office of Child Safety and Injury Prevention (OCSIP), CFWB promotes strategies and interventions that address significant causes of fatal and severe unintentional injuries that primarily affect children under age six, who are more vulnerable to injury. OCSIP’s priority focus areas include infant safe sleep, Shaken Baby Syndrome, and child poisoning caused by exposure to medicines, household chemicals and cannabis-infused edibles. CFWB is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Child Safety & Injury Prevention Undergraduate Intern to join our OCSIP team.

As a Child Safety & Injury Prevention Intern, you will work with our team to emphasize the importance of parent-centered engagement, equitable access to child safety resources, and maximizing community power to effectively promote injury prevention strategies. This internship offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience working alongside a team responsible for making it easier for New York City families to find and access what they need to keep children safe at home, as they play, and in their communities. Additionally, as a member of the 2026, ACS Summer Internship Program cohort, you will participate in an enrichment program designed to fully engage students into the ACS and NYC government experience. Internship programming includes professional development workshops, lunch and learns, speaker events, NYC government tours, and networking opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

- Program Support: Assist with development, implementation, and evaluation of injury prevention efforts (e.g., Infant Safe Sleep Training and community events related to the prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome and pediatric exposures to medicines, cannabis edibles, and household toxins)

- Data Analysis & Research: Conduct literature reviews on child injury prevention topics and summarize data to inform prevention strategies

- Program Development & Evaluation: Assist with maintaining databases by inputting, reviewing, and analyzing data to identify trends

- Community Outreach & Engagement: Create educational materials to promote safety awareness, including fliers, fact sheets, presentations, infographics and website content

- Administrative Tasks: Assist with meeting coordination, documenting program activities, updating digital resources, and supporting team projects

Learning Outcomes:

- Gain comprehensive knowledge on developing and executing communications strategies

- Develop skills in collaborating across teams towards desired outcomes

- Enhance abilities in coordinating and executing organizational tasks and events

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Section 424-A of the New York Social Services Law requires an authorized agency to inquire whether a candidate for employment with child-caring responsibilities has been the subject of a child abuse and maltreatment report.
