DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB: The primary functions of the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader are to plan and facilitate Supplemental Instruction; build professional relationships with faculty, staff and students with the purpose of enhancing the mastery of concepts or applications of a specific course of study. Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets historically difficult courses. SI sessions are regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions for all students enrolled in a targeted course.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Work in-person in the designated CACE rooms at Lamond-Riggs, providing academic support (supplemental instruction, tutoring, etc.) to students. Facilitate two 60-minute small group study sessions per week throughout the semester in the Center for Academic and Career Excellence. Attend 1 hour of lecture in the class section that you are assigned to each week. Communicate with the course professor. Report immediately to the Coordinator of the Center for Academic and Career Excellence when critical issues arise. Attend and participate in SI Leader group meetings as scheduled. Adhere to the policies and procedures of the University and the Center for Academic and Career Excellence. Demonstrate professionalism, responsibility, punctuality, and academic integrity. Maintain privacy and confidentiality of student information, including course progress and performance. Helping faculty and staff to facilitate weekend workshops Helping to promote C.A.C.E. at in-building events Other duties as assigned. REQUIRED COMPETENCIES Must have high competency in NO LESS than two subjects (ex: Accounting and Eng/Writing) A SI leader must demonstrate an ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with students. A SI leader must have completed the course(s) in which they wish to tutor, earning an A. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds. Excellent level of responsibility, reliability, and punctuality. Model appropriate professional attitude and behaviors toward faculty, staff, and students.
STANDARDS & EXPECTATIONS: Expectations of the job: Work consists of a variety of complex interrelated tasks. The Incumbent is expected to function with considerable independence on all assignments and to use initiative and seasoned judgment in arriving at sound conclusions and recommendations. Recurring contacts are made with students, staff members, faculty, administrators, and the public, as well as with staff at the College. Contacts are established to open channels of communication and acquire information for decision-making and dissemination to others. Normal physical dexterity is required. The work is generally performed in an office setting. Development and Counseling: Employee is expected to participate in activities that will help in the development of his/her career and help in the performance of the job. An employee may seek counseling from the immediate supervisor. Training: Training is available to help improve the skill and knowledge level, and for updates on the latest techniques, methods, and theories that are used in the industry. Knowledge of UDC Rules and Regulations: The position requires a solid understanding of the policies and procedures of the Board of Trustees, the University, as well as applicable Federal and D.C. government laws.
