We’re looking for an Extreme Event Research Scientist
Based in the U.S. and reporting to the Vice President, Risk & Analytics, this role will join our dynamic Model Intelligence Team (MIT), which is part of the Risk Analytics Group responsible for creating, enhancing and maintaining Hamilton’s view of risk. The role will also work closely with the underwriting and actuarial teams.
We’re seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and well-organized individual with excellent analytical skills and strong research experience in extreme event risk assessment.
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States. Hamilton will not sponsor applicants for work visas.
What you will do
Help create, enhance, and maintain Hamilton’s view of risk by conducting independent research, and incorporating the findings into external catastrophe model selection, adjustments, and risk pricing
Provide in-depth review and evaluation of external vendor models
Analyze exposure and claims data to provide insights into Hamilton’s risk profile
Perform independent research to form a clear strategy for addressing the impact of climate change
Evaluate and investigate vendor model changes, and communicate findings to all stakeholders
Develop model assessment and usage reports for both internal and external stakeholders
Develop a good understanding of how Hamilton uses catastrophe models to estimate losses and price various lines of business, as well as manage the overall portfolio.
What you require for the role
Master’s degree or Ph.D. in meteorology, engineering, hydrology, hydraulic, fire, climate Science, or related discipline.
Experience in catastrophe model development or validation. Experience in the areas of underwriting, actuarial, or risk management is a plus.
Demonstrated experience in using risk models and aggregation tools, and data investigation, particularly for natural catastrophe and terror risks
Proven ability to work effectively across interdisciplinary teams and influence colleagues, particularly those with whom there is no reporting relationship
Proficient in SQL, Python or R
Excellent analytical and data skills
Excellent communication and organizational skills
