Job Description

Under the direction of the Safe Beds Program Supervisor, or designate, the Residential Support Worker will provide support to develop mental health and housing related goals, develop life skills, and provide residential support to the Safe Beds clients of CMHA- WECB.  The incumbent will assess for program eligibility in person and over the phone, complete the necessary documentation to admit clients into the program, assist and support clients to identify the necessary goals to continue on a recovery path, provide support to access safer housing, and connect to appropriate resources to continue support past Safe Beds.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

Admission to Safe Beds

Liaise with police to assess and admit appropriate clients for residential support in accordance with Safe Beds guidelines.

Orient clients to the program.

Monitor clients while in residential care to ensure safety.

 

Goal Plan Development

In collaboration with the client, develop a goal plan relating to mental health, housing, and activities of daily living.

Supporting clients in following through the steps of their goal plan.

Making appropriate community referrals to continue client support past Safe Beds.

Activities of Daily Living

Facilitating and supporting the achievement of the care plan with a focus on activities of daily living.

Providing skill-development on an individual or small group basis to support the development of life skills to maintain their home (such as budgeting, cooking, cleaning, hygiene, etc.).

Providing supportive intervention and problem-solving with clients specific to practical issues related to activities of daily living.

Providing ongoing support through positive and constructive feedback, encouragement and informal evaluation.

Providing life skills support to individuals in the housing program to support residential tenancy skills.

 

Community Development

Keeping abreast of resources in the community.

Maintaining professional contact with commonly accessed organizations so that purposeful interaction on behalf of clients can be effectively accomplished.

Reducing stigma by actively working towards overcoming barriers to community integration.

 

Program Evaluation and Development

Identifying gaps, interruptions or disruptions in services.

Assessing client program satisfaction.

Determining efficacy of formal services and informal support.

Actively participating in improving the quality of programs and service delivery.

Develops Educational Programs relevant to client group.

Organizing and conducting life skills training groups for clients at varied locations.

Obtaining and developing resources for delivery.

Evaluating effectiveness of activities and sessions.

 

Ensures objectives of program are met.

Participating in the evaluation of program goals and objectives making recommendations on changes to current program activities for improved service delivery.

Working toward the best interest of the client as a member of the CMHA team.

Ensures a minimum workload of direct client intervention as negotiated with the Supervisor

 

Ensures all file management and reporting functions are maintained in a comprehensive and timely manner.

Ensuring all client contact is recorded appropriately.

Ensuring that monthly, annual, and other required reporting documentation are completed.

 

Participates in community education within scope of the role

Providing community presentations relating to Safe Beds to promote the program.

Participating in special events and activities for agency public education campaigns such as Mental Health Week and Mental Illness Awareness Week.

Maintains general knowledge of the Mental Health Act and related legislation.

Represents program and agency in a professional manner.

Substitutes for and assists other agency staff where skills are applicable.

Providing additional support to other staff as required.

EDUCATION & SKILLS:

Requires knowledge and skills acquired through completion of a two-year post-secondary diploma in a relevant discipline accepted by the employer such as Recreation Therapy, Occupational Therapist Assistant or Developmental Service Worker

Life Skills certification would be considered an asset

One (1) year recent and relevant experience, in the judgment of the employer, working with and teaching life skills to vulnerable individuals, particularly those with a mental illness or related diagnosis

Comprehensive knowledge of mental illnesses, signs and symptoms, as well as planning and organizational skills

Strong assessment skills and knowledge of community resources

A valid Ontario Driver’s License with access to a reliable vehicle and proof of current insurance and licensing are required for this position

Bilingualism in both official languages at the advanced level would be considered an asset

Hours of Work:       The work schedule will be determined based upon program needs. Casual employees are called in as operationally required. Flexibility will be required as shifts may become available on short notice in circumstances of sick coverage. Casual employees who work in the Safe Beds Program are required to work a minimum of three (3) shifts in a twelve (12) week period.

 

Salary range:          Grade 6, $31.44 – $37.20 per hour

                                 Per 2022 - 2026 Collective Agreement

Applicable shift premiums are paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement, Article 17.11.

 

The one-hour lunch break is paid on all weekend shifts in recognition that staff may not leave the premises during their break due to health and safety requirements and staffing needs.
