Job Description

Role Overview

Inspire Stanford students to make Judaism integral to their life choices and values. Enrich students’ lives and shape the future of Jewish community as our next campus rabbi. As an authentic Jewish teacher, you will inspire and guide Jewish students at Stanford, working with them to build vibrant, meaningful, and pluralistic Jewish communities. As one of our rabbis, you will play a key role in helping students live lives of meaning and building Jewish community through meaningful conversations, collaborative ventures, educational experiences, and innovative approaches to religious life. As part of our Hillel team, you’ll bring greater Jewish context and depth to all our offerings, while advancing Hillel’s overall engagement and educational goals.

What You’ll Do

• You are essentially our Chief Learning Officer, and will work with our Executive Director and Associate Director (your supervisor) to craft a vision for the ritual and educational aspects of Hillel’s work.

• You will help Hillel embody a vision of Jewish pluralism that deeply respects the Jewish identities and needs of every student, without one variety dominating the others. To this end, you will help staff and students bridge the distance between their various Jewish backgrounds and experiences, fostering a community of mutual respect.

• You will coordinate, implement, and evaluate all aspects of major Jewish holiday programming and observances on campus, including Shabbat, High Holidays, and Passover. Sometimes you’ll be the shaliach tzibur, sometimes you’ll be organizing the work of other clergy, staff, and music leaders, and sometimes you’ll be mentoring students in their public leadership.

• You will advise and support student leaders, empowering them to create regular, warm, welcoming, and inspiring ritual and Jewish experiences for their peers, especially around Shabbat and holidays, developing their Jewish competency and confidence.

• You will be our teacher, offering both one-on-one and group learning opportunities that match or anticipate student interests. You’ll help Hillel cultivate partnerships with other Jewish centers of learning to expand the learning horizons of our students. And you’ll be an educational resource partner for Hillel staff and student leaders

• You will support students with ritual and pastoral care through the life-cycle moments that touch college students (adult b’nai mitzvah, conversion/affirmation of Jewish identity, grief and loss, etc.). You will be a listening ear, a strong shoulder, and a wise guide to students on their path to adulting

• You will develop and nurture relationships with Hillel staff and Stanford University, particularly in Stanford’s Student Affairs, Office of Religious Life (ORSL), and Residential and Dining departments.

What You’ve Accomplished

• Significant personal exposure to diverse modes of Jewish life, including the culture/needs of halachically observant Jews

• Rabbinic ordination from an accredited institution.

• 4+ years of relevant work experience. Experience in Hillel, youth movements, camping, or experiential Jewish education is helpful.

• Proven success in community building and previous experience in program visioning and implementation.

• Training and experience in counseling and administration is desirable.

What You’ll Bring to the Job

• An approachable, dynamic, and engaging personality, with outstanding interpersonal skills.

• A strong knowledge base of Jewish content, ranging from traditional Jewish texts to contemporary Jewish wisdom, culture, and unconventional Jewish sources.

• Expertise in leading complex conversations about Judaism and Israel in a way that is approachable and meets students at various points in their personal Jewish journeys.

• A commitment to creating an inclusive, vibrant, and pluralistic Jewish community.

• A passion for engaging students through Jewish learning and religious practice and an ability to foster intellectual, spiritual, and ethical curiosity and exploration.

• Confidence in initiating and running programs, and comfort in asking questions.

• Creative problem-solving, proactive communication, and collaboration.

• Ability to collaborate across teams both inside and outside of Hillel.

• Ability to work flexible hours needed to complete job requirements, including some nights, weekends, and holidays.

What You’ll Receive

• Competitive salary in the non-profit marketplace. The salary range for this role is $105,00 - $140,000

• A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, Life, AD&D and Long Term Disability (LTD) insurances, Flexible Spending accounts, vacation/sick time, and parental leave.

• Great professional development, mentoring, and skill-building opportunities.

• Travel regionally and abroad.
