Job Description
Recovery Coach
Beccarian Correctional Care
At Beccarian Correctional Care, we implement and operate therapeutic and recovery-oriented programs within correctional settings. Our mission is to reduce criminal and medical recidivism, build recovery capital, and enhance rehabilitation through innovative Care Models tailored to complex needs.
We provide structured Therapeutic Living Units (TLUs) and Transitional Service (TS) programs throughout Alberta, supporting individuals with vocational training, family reintegration, and relapse prevention strategies. By building recovery capital, we empower members to achieve lasting recovery and fulfilling lives.
We are currently seeking a Recovery Coach to join our team in the Therapeutic Living Units (TLUs) at the Red Deer Remand Centre. TLUs function as Therapeutic Communities within correctional environments, offering individuals the opportunity to engage in evidence-based care for substance use disorders. As a Recovery Coach, you will play an integral role in supporting the "community as method" model. Working collaboratively with members, you will engage in activities such as group sessions, recreation, and community responsibilities—emphasizing peer-based support and modeling positive recovery behaviors.
Role-specific Accountabilities
Ongoing Support: Provide consistent encouragement and care to members, assisting them during evening hours and fostering a supportive environment.
Program Engagement: Motivate and assist members by participating in therapy sessions, group meetings, work-as-therapy activities, and recreational programming.
Meeting Facilitation: Lead or co-lead recovery meetings including AA, NA, and SMART Recovery to help members feel engaged and supported in their recovery journey.
Member Monitoring: Observe and report on members' progress and concerns to the TLU Team Lead, contributing to adjustments in recovery and risk management plans.
Crisis Management: Support clinical staff during crisis situations to ensure a safe and secure community setting.
Community Building: Promote a healthy and respectful community culture grounded in mutual support and peer accountability.
Qualifications
Previous experience in a caregiving or support role, ideally within mental health, addiction recovery, or a related healthcare setting.
Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Experience working in a therapeutic environment and a foundational understanding of substance use disorders and mental health challenges.
Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive situations with empathy and discretion.
Lived experience with addiction and/or mental health recovery, and experience working in correctional settings or with justice-involved populations is considered an asset.
Conditions of Employment
Must successfully complete a Vulnerable Persons Criminal Record Check before starting and annually thereafter.
Clearance for facility access as approved by the Director of the Correctional Facility.
