Backend Tech Lead - Typescript & AWS at a Thriving Australian Fintech

Lead a team building next-gen payment systems at massive scale
Join Zeller’s growing engineering team of 150 as a backend focussed Tech Lead combining hands-on technical contribution with people leadership. You’ll manage a fully remote squad of engineers while working in Zeller's payments area to build and scale our acquiring platform to new markets.

Leading your team from the front and staying deeply technical as a player-coach, this role offers the opportunity for high impact technical leadership with formal people management responsibilities.

About the team
Zeller’s Payments BFF team builds the customer-facing APIs and systems that enable millions of payments to Australian businesses each month. Working with product managers, designers and other engineering groups, your new backend team is building and scaling some of Zeller’s core product areas like terminal and ecommerce payments, settlements and more.

What You'll Do: Technical Leadership & System Ownership
- Drive architectural solutions collaboratively with your team and engineering leadership, to build and scale Zeller’s payments platform
- Write production code regularly as a core contributor while maintaining oversight of your team's technical deliverables
- Own operational excellence for your team’s systems including monitoring, incident response, and reliability improvements
- Champion modern development practices including active use of LLMs within your team and the adoption of technical practices at Zeller
- Lead and manage a team of software engineers, identifying skill gaps, managing personal development plans and fostering a positive culture of learning, ownership, and psychological safety
- Partner closely with product managers as joint owners of your product success, contributing technical and delivery insight to shape what gets built

What We're Looking For
- You have owned backend systems and scaled customer facing platforms
- You have coached software engineers and have driven a team’s capability uplift through mentorship and personal example
- You have worked in product-driven companies and have a track record of driving pace and delivery
- You are experienced in backend system design and demonstrate well reasoned, rational decision making with the ability to navigate between detail and broader context
- You have exceptional written and verbal communication and can move from a conversation with non-technical stakeholders to reframing a project into detailed designs requirements for your engineering team
- You have a strong self-learning drive and are actively using and adapting your workflows to incorporate generative AI tools
- Prior experience with payment acquiring systems is highly valued

Technical Background
You should be comfortable writing production Typescript code, but experience with our full tech-stack is not an expectation. Some tools we use

- A serverless, event driven system architecture built on AWS
- AWS Lambda, Event Bridge, API Gateway, SQS
- Relational and NoSQL datastores including Aurora Postgres and DynamoDB
- Application monitoring tools including CloudTrail, X-Ray, Datadog
- A rigorous approach to continuous integration and system correctness that includes infrastructure as code (CDK, Terraform), and high coverage of unit, integration, and system tests built with Github Actions
