Job Description

The Automated Enforcement Unit (AEU) is part of the Division of Traffic Operations at the NYC Department of Transportation. AEU manages four automated enforcement programs: red light, bus lane, speed, and Weigh-in-Motion (WIM). Automated enforcement is a core component of the Mayor’s Vision Zero initiative, and recent legislative changes require rapid program expansion and modernization.

AEU is seeking two City Planners II to support this growth and help ensure expansion is coordinated, data-driven, and aligned with best practices. Planners will have the opportunity to:
- Develop planning strategies for individual automated enforcement programs and future expansions
- Coordinate with contractors to address construction and installation barriers at key intersections and corridors
- Streamline communication with the MTA and other DOT teams on future Automated Camera Enforcement bus planning
- Use spatial crash analysis and safety risk mapping to understand where different crash types are occurring at intersections to inform targeted camera siting (i.e. directional approach)
- Work with teams across DOT to apply crash data and analysis to prioritize where enforcement is most likely to improve safety outcomes
- Support coordination across DOT units to map AEU infrastructure alongside other agency assets to support integrated planning and implementation
- Coordinate with multiple DOT to incorporate proactive datasets, including pedestrian and cyclist volumes, vulnerable populations, and emerging near-miss data, into siting methodologies
- Work with internal AEU teams such as processing, auditing, and administration to keep tracking applications up to date and on ad hoc projects as needed
- Research best practices and emerging automated enforcement technologies and help support pilots, evaluations, and grant applications
