Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire Fleet Services Unit within the Management Services & Budget Directorate, located in Downsville, New York. Under supervision, of the Supervisor of Mechanics, the Auto Mechanic will work to ensure all Bureau of Water Supply and Bureau of Police and Security vehicles in the Downsville region are properly maintained and repaired. Specific duties include:

- Repairing and maintaining engines, motors and motor powered equipment powered by internal combustion engines, motors and motor powered equipment, including brake systems, transmissions, ignition systems, rear ends, differential assemblies, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, electronic systems and other related components and systems

- Aligning wheels and repairing steering equipment, relining and adjusting brakes and clutches

- Making minor repairs and adjustments in the field so that a vehicle may be returned to the garage or repair shop under its own power

- Diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical defects on all vehicles and equipment

- Being responsible for the overall maintenance of fleet vehicles to include brakes, engine, transmission, tires, hydraulic & fuel systems and other related components and systems

- Being responsible for towing vehicles and other equipment to shops and vendors in order to have repairs completed

- Preparing reports and orders, and maintaining records and inventories along with receiving parts and supplies

License Requirements

At the time of appointment, candidates must possess a New York State Class B Commercial Driver License ("CDL") or a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York and a Learner's Permit for a Class B Commercial Driver License. Appointees hired with a Learner's Permit must obtain the Class B CDL within six months of appointment. The CDL, with no restrictions that would preclude the performance of Auto Mechanic work, must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Special Working Conditions

Some of the physical activities performed by Auto Mechanics and environmental conditions experienced are: working in a non-temperature controlled environment; climbing ladders, moving heavy automotive parts, carrying heavy tool boxes, crawling and working in narrow spaces, working in the vicinity of hazardous, flammable materials and solvents and engine exhaust fumes.
Auto Mechanics may be required to work various shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

AUTO MECHANIC - 92510

1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an auto mechanic; or
2. Not less than two and one-half years of full-time satisfactory experience as specified in "1" above plus sufficient helper or apprentice experience or relevant full-time education acquired in a college, university,technical school, trade school or vocational high school approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization, to make up the equivalent of five years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of helper or apprentice experience or relevant education.

License Requirements:
