Summary/Objective
The Associate Engineer supports the design, modification, and commissioning of power system protection and automation schemes. This entry-level role works closely with senior engineering staff to learn design standards, tools, and processes while contributing to project deliverables under close supervision.
Essential Functions
Assist in developing substation protection schemes and specifying relays for redundant protection systems.
Prepare basic engineering drawings, sketches, and documentation under guidance.
Assist in calculating and programming substation protective relay set points.
Support commissioning activities by providing field assistance and documentation.
Learn and apply industry standards and internal design procedures.
Maintain organized project files and records.
Collaborate with project teams, contractors, and utility personnel to support project execution.
Participate in training and mentorship programs to develop technical skills.

Required Education and Experience:
Must-have:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
Ability to travel up to 25% for field commissioning near energized equipment.
0–2 years of engineering experience in electric utility or power systems.
Nice-to-have:
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT).
Internship or prior related experience.
CAD experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic understanding of electrical theory, power systems, and protective relaying.
Proficiency in CAD software preferred.
Ability to follow technical instructions and work under supervision.
Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management.
Compensation:
This is a full-time, salaried position with an annual base salary range of $65,000 – $85,000, depending on experience and qualifications. The Associate Engineer is eligible for REI’s comprehensive benefits package.
