Code for America is looking for a talented Associate Director, Philanthropy who will Close $2M (total contract value) of grants per year from new funders and existing funders. The Associate Director, Philanthropy will pitch and present excellently to funders, and produce strong written material including proposals and reports. As a face of Code for America, you are expected to be comfortable speaking to and through Code for America’s major program areas including the Safety Net Lab, Tax Benefits, and Criminal Justice.

About the role:

The Associate Director of Philanthropy, is a frontline member of the Philanthropy Team who is responsible for building, managing, soliciting, and stewarding six to seven figure multi-year grants and philanthropic investments from a pipeline of foundations and individual donors. You are responsible for owning all aspects of prospecting, cultivating, soliciting, stewarding and renewing grants while delivering a best in class experience to all engaged funders.

The Associate Director of Philanthropy will identify and evaluate funding opportunities by integrating knowledge of funder priorities, program strategy, and organizational capacity — and build internal alignment around the most promising ones. This includes setting and leading internal meetings to assess and greenlight opportunities, and (with assistance from program and project managers) shepherding through project plans, budgets and narratives and being ultimately responsible for shipping these materials to the funder for consideration.

This role will report to the Head of Philanthropy and is expected to travel 25% of the time.

Code for America is based in California and can employ those who reside full-time within the United States. This is a remote position.

In this position you will:

• Revenue planning, strategy and execution 50%

• Work with an amazing team to raise millions of dollars in order to help government work, starting with the people who need it most.

• Devise and execute a development strategy for existing and prospective funders, including: researching and identifying prospects, reaching out to and engaging funders to have introductory meetings; moving funders through the pipeline and converting them to donors; coordinating with all internal stakeholders to cultivate and engage new prospects.

• Drive cultivation and stewardship plan including support meeting prep, create decks, ensure follow-up, create and manage process for funder touchpoints, invite funders to events, and draft correspondence.

• Partner with the Finance Team to ensure all contacts, accounts, opportunities, and pipeline information is entered into and maintained in Salesforce.

• Coordinate with Program and Product teams to gather required information to produce concept notes, LOIs, proposals, budgets and reports. Confidentially and accurately submits funder materials via email, portal, or other mechanism when completed.

• Take full ownership of funder pipeline outcomes, holding themselves and collaborating stakeholders accountable to deadlines and quality standards, and escalating blockers proactively rather than absorbing them

• Strategic Leadership 20%

• Guide and advise on funding potential in order to inform and drive resource allocation that achieves program goals and organizational mission.

• Contribute to team knowledge by sharing learnings from funder engagement, identifying patterns across the portfolio, and bringing new approaches to cultivation and stewardship strategies.

• Drive adoption of new processes and tools within the philanthropy function to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

• Mentor peers by sharing expertise in funder engagement and proposal development to build team-wide capability.

• Navigate and align internal stakeholders on funding opportunities, resolving competing priorities and escalating to leadership when appropriate.

• Prospect Research 25%

• Build and oversee a blended portfolio made up of prospects and current funders.

• Other duties as assigned 5%

About you:

• 7+ years professional fundraising experience, sales, or similar background

• Demonstrated track record of meeting revenue goals

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Proactive and persistent with outreach, follow up, and engagement

• Highly organized with careful attention to detail

• Must be energetic, flexible, adaptable, and positive

• Enjoy working in a high growth, fast-paced environment with high standards of excellence

• Actively seeks to expand knowledge of the civic tech and social sector funding landscape, and applies learnings from across the field to strengthen Code for America's development approach

• Willingness to travel up to 10% time (health and safety permitting)

Salary:

Code for America’s salary bands are transparent as a part of our commitment to transparency and fairness. As part of our hiring practices, we aim to target the midpoint of the 2nd quartile of the range for all new hires.

Offer targets vary based on market / geographic location. The offer targets for this role range from $108,503 to $132,825 annually.

• $500 annual (per calendar year) stipend towards professional development; prorated at time of hire

• Up to $500 of professional development funds can be rolled over each year, up to a maximum of $1000

• Training / guidance for staff required to utilize AI as part of their role, plus opportunities for employees to gain AI-related skills to support job and career growth

• Retirement & 401k Plans:

• Employees receive a 100% employer match on the first 3% of contributions.

• Employees with 3+ years of service receive an additional 50% match on contributions between 3% and 5%, for a maximum employer contribution of 5%

• Medical:

• At least one no cost health insurance option for full-time employees for employee-only coverage

• A minimum of 80% of the cost of dependent coverage

• Remote Work:

• Code for America employees may work remotely across the US

• Code for America employees main residence must be within the US

• Full-time employees work 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday

• Collaborative working hours: we aim to hold all internal meetings between 10 AM - 3 PM PT. We expect all Code for America staff to be available during these set working hours

• Time Off:

• Open personal time off (subject to manager approval), a minimum of 14 paid holidays, and an org-wide closure from Christmas Day through New Year's Day

• Paid sick time; up to 96 hours annually

• 17 weeks of paid parental and family leave

• 3 weeks of paid sabbatical after 5 years of service
