About Br-dge
Br-dge is a payment orchestration company helping enterprise businesses build better payment experiences. Its platform gives merchants more control, flexibility, and visibility across their payment stack.
Founded in Edinburgh in 2018, Br-dge works with well known brands across sectors such as retail, travel, gaming, and gambling, and partners with major names including Visa and Worldpay. The business is growing, the platform is evolving, and the engineering team is continuing to mature as it scales.
About the role
We are hiring an Associate Back End Engineer to join one of our product engineering squads.
The team currently consists of 6 engineers, plus a Product Owner and Engineering Manager. The team is already quite senior, with strong senior engineers and lead level support in place, so this role is aimed at someone earlier in their career who wants to grow in a strong engineering environment.
You will contribute to Scrum based development work and support the team across a mix of engineering improvement, product delivery, and ongoing platform work. Right now, the team is focused mainly on engineering improvement initiatives, with around one third of sprint work tied to product features.
This role is best suited to someone who enjoys being hands on, wants to keep improving, and is comfortable working on clearly scoped tickets while developing the confidence to ask good questions, seek clarity, and contribute more over time.
What you will be doing
You will support the team by delivering well defined tasks within the context of a sprint. Over time, you will build confidence and understanding of how your work connects to team goals and the wider platform.
Your work will include:
Building and improving back end services in Java
Working on well defined sprint tickets across feature work, bugs, tech debt, engineering improvements, and integrations
Writing clean, tested, maintainable code
Contributing to unit tests, code reviews, and documentation
Asking clarifying questions when requirements are unclear
Sharing progress, blockers, and updates clearly with the team
Taking part in Scrum ceremonies, retrospectives, and day to day team collaboration
Learning how to balance speed, quality, and impact in delivery
You will work most closely with the other engineers in the Scrum team, with support from the Engineering Manager and more experienced engineers around you.
Tech stack
Our teams mainly work with:
Java
Spring Boot
REST APIs
Kubernetes
AWS
RabbitMQ
Couchbase
PostgreSQL
Gradle
GitHub
You do not need to have used every tool in the stack. We are open on some tooling background if the Java fundamentals are there and the willingness to learn is clear.
What we are looking for
Must have
Commercial Java development experience
Good understanding of back end development fundamentals
Ability to work from well defined tickets in a Scrum environment
Solid communication skills, both written and verbal
A proactive attitude to asking questions, raising blockers, and moving work forward
Care for code quality, testing, and documentation
Nice to have
Experience with Spring Boot
Experience building or supporting REST APIs
Exposure to cloud environments such as AWS
Exposure to messaging tools such as RabbitMQ
Experience with databases such as PostgreSQL, Couchbase, SQL Server, or Oracle
Familiarity with containerisation, CI/CD, or DevOps tooling
The kind of person who will do well here
We are looking for someone who:
Takes a structured approach to work
Is curious and asks clarifying questions
Communicates clearly and with empathy
Shares progress and blockers even when unsure
Understands that quality and pace both matter
Is comfortable learning from stronger engineers around them
Shows initiative rather than waiting to be told everything
What we offer
Remote first working
Optional office access in central Edinburgh
33 days holiday including public holidays
Birthday off
Flexible working
Family healthcare
Life insurance
Employee assistance programme
Investment in learning and development
Regular team events and socials
A strong environment for growth and progression
