Southeastern Illinois College is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Assistant to the Director of Environmental Services to help maintain a safe, efficient, and well-maintained campus environment. This role supports daily operations across facilities, grounds, transportation, and event setup, with a strong focus on safety, compliance, and customer service.
This is a hands-on leadership position requiring technical expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Facility Operations & Maintenance
Assist in overseeing daily physical plant operations, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, roofing, painting, and general maintenance
Monitor climate control systems and building automation programs
Ensure all facilities remain safe, secure, and operational
Maintain blueprints and equipment specifications
Support preventative maintenance and energy conservation programs
Supervision & Team Leadership
Supervise part-time staff, student workers, and volunteer groups
Assign tasks, monitor performance, and manage scheduling and time-off requests
Participate in hiring and training of staff
Provide guidance on safety practices and compliance
Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and building safety codes
Oversee proper disposal of hazardous materials and maintain SDS records
Conduct regular inspections of buildings, grounds, and transportation equipment
Respond to emergencies, including equipment failures, alarms, and safety incidents
Assist with fire safety procedures, disaster drills, and regulatory compliance
Transportation & Equipment Oversight
Inspect and maintain college vehicles and equipment
Maintain records for inspections, routes, and repairs
Ensure maintenance procedures are followed consistently
Communication & Problem Solving
Address and resolve concerns from faculty, staff, and the public
Assist with reports, proposals, and project planning
Analyze and troubleshoot construction and repair issues
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
Associate Degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, Architecture, Facilities Management, or a related field (preferred)
Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience
Skills & Abilities
Strong technical knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and building systems
Familiarity with OSHA regulations and safety standards
Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
Ability to multitask and work under pressure
Strong attention to detail and follow-through
Ability to read and interpret manuals, blueprints, and reports
Additional Requirements
Valid driver’s license required
Successful completion of a criminal background check
Availability to assist with evening, weekend, and other occasional scheduling needs, including but not limited to holidays, summer breaks, and the reduced summer schedule.
Salary:
$50,000 – $55,000 annually, based on qualifications and relevant experience.
