Position Description
The Assistant Superintendent, Self-Perform Operations, supports the planning, coordination, and execution of self-performed construction work across one or more active projects. This is a field-based, developmental leadership role designed for individuals building a career in construction operations and self-perform management.
The Assistant Superintendent, Self-Perform Operations, works closely with Self-Perform Managers, Project Managers, Superintendents, and field crews to help ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with project plans, schedule expectations, and quality requirements. This role requires daily on-site presence and includes hands-on coordination and day-to-day support of self-perform crews.
Key Responsibilities
Support daily execution of self-performed work to align with plans, safety requirements, and production goals
Coordinate with self-perform leadership and field supervision to communicate work plans, constraints, and priorities
Track daily progress for assigned self-perform scopes (labor hours, manpower, quantities installed) and report updates
Assist with short-interval planning (daily/weekly work planning and basic look-ahead coordination)
Help ensure workmanship meets quality expectations by supporting field checks and addressing punch items quickly
Support material and equipment coordination (deliveries, staging, utilization, and site readiness)
Identify and elevate field issues (access, materials, conflicts, rework risk) with suggested next steps
Prepare basic field documentation (daily logs, production notes, progress updates, safety documentation as needed)
Participate in coordination meetings as needed and follow up on action items to keep crews moving
Learn and apply JBC systems and processes related to self-perform operations, scheduling, cost awareness, and quality format
Essential Skills & Competencies
Strong field presence with a “get it done the right way” mindset (safety, quality, teamwork)
Clear communication with crews and project leadership (listens well, asks good questions, closes loops)
Organized and reliable follow-through on daily priorities and documentation
Basic planning and coordination ability (sequencing, constraints awareness, readiness checks)
Coachable, adaptable, and motivated to grow into construction leadership
Professionalism, integrity, and strong work ethic in a fast-paced environment
Required Qualifications
Associate or Bachelor’s degree (or currently pursuing) in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field OR 2–3 years of hands-on construction experience (trades, lead, foreman-in-training, or similar) with interest in moving into operations leadership
General understanding of commercial construction means and methods
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
Working knowledge of jobsite safety expectations and safe work practices
Proficiency with email and basic Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word)
OSHA 30 Certification or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe
Willingness to work on-site daily in a field-oriented role
Preferred Experience (includes, but is not limited to):
Familiarity with Procore, HH2, or similar construction software
Prior internship or field engineering exposure on commercial projects

Physical Demands & Work Environment

Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and sun exposure
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods
Ability to navigate active construction sites with changing ground conditions and elevations
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
Ability to safely use ladders, scaffolding, and other access equipment as required
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Compensation & Benefits
The base salary for this position is one component of J. Benton Construction’s total compensation package. Actual compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including a candidate’s skills, experience, education, relevant qualifications, internal equity, and business needs.
