Position Description:

The McGill University Department of Critical Care Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) are inviting applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) based at the Montreal General Hospital (MGH) and The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute Hospital). We are looking for an intensivist with demonstrable interest in neurocritical care and trauma. This will be a Contract Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The successful candidate will join two multidisciplinary adult intensive care units at the Montreal General Hospital (MGH) and the The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute Hospital)—two major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. These units form one of the largest and most active critical care programs in Canada, providing tertiary and quaternary care in medical, surgical, trauma, and neurosciences critical care.

Job Duties:

The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Clinical Care where they will be expected to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm, and excellence in clinical education. The successful candidate will be expected to be an intensivist with demonstrable interest in neurocritical care and trauma. Joint or cross-site clinical responsibilities between the Montreal General Hospital (MGH) and the MNI (The Neuro) is anticipated.

The successful candidate will be expected to perform clinical activities at the Montreal General Hospital (a mixed medical surgical ICU with a heavy focus on trauma and traumatic brain injury) and at the Montreal Neurological Institute Hospital (non-traumatic neurological critical illness). This opportunity is designed to provide academic flexibility. The incumbent will also be expected to bring, and further develop, specialized expertise that will add value to the ICU program, such as, but not limited to, the following:

• Neurocritical care;

• Advanced critical care ultrasound;

• Medical education;

• Quality improvement and patient safety;

• Other relevant academic domains aligned with critical care.

The successful candidate will also be expected to:

• Provide high-quality adult critical care within the MUHC ICUs, including participation in the on-call schedule;

• Contribute to academic activities across the Critical Care Department-affiliated hospitals;

• Develop and maintain an academic profile aligned with their respective position;

• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and allied health professionals.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill’s academic mission (e.g., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Candidates must:

• Hold an MD degree, and must hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec;

• Be certified by the Collège des Médecins du Québec;

• Be certified in Critical Care Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC), or equivalent;

• Have completed (or be in the process of completing) subspecialty training in Adult Critical Care Medicine;

• Demonstrate excellence in, and commitment to, clinical care and academic medicine;

• Possess recognized expertise and specialized training in areas such as, but not limited to, education, ultrasound, quality improvement, and/or neuroscience-related critical care;

• Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the language skills necessary to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
