Reporting to the Manager of Plant Operations and Engineering Services, the Assistant Manager provides operational leadership for the day-to-day activities of the Engineering and Maintenance Department at Etobicoke General Hospital’s East Tower. 
This role is responsible for supervising and supporting a team of maintenance staff, prioritizing and coordinating work activities, and monitoring performance, productivity, and operational efficiencies to ensure the reliable functioning of critical hospital infrastructure. The role also evaluates, recommends, and implements enhancements to building systems, maintenance programs, policies, procedures, and contracted services to support continuous improvement and regulatory compliance.
Accountabilities:
• Supervision and day-to-day leadership of the operation and maintenance of all physical plant systems, including HVAC and Building Automation Systems (BAS), normal and emergency power distribution, lighting systems, potable and process water systems, medical gas and Pneumatic systems, elevating devices, fire and life safety systems, and grounds maintenance (including snow removal and landscaping)
• Supervise skilled trades personnel in the execution of their duties, including performance management, coaching, training, scheduling, records retention
• In collaboration with the Manager of Plant Operations and Engineering Services, address labour relations matters involving unionized staff in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and organizational policies
• Provide technical leadership and guidance by identifying, analyzing, and resolving infrastructure and maintenance-related issues
• Organize, coordinate, and schedule daily operational activities for Plant Operations, Maintenance, and Grounds teams, ensuring adherence to established standard operating procedures and safety requirements
• Oversee the implementation and optimization of the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), including demand work orders and preventive maintenance programs; monitor key performance indicators and departmental productivity metrics
• Identify and evaluate repair strategies, coordinate multi-trade work activities, and ensure timely and cost-effective execution of maintenance projects
• Conduct technical assessments of infrastructure systems and recommend and implement improvements to enhance reliability and efficiency
• Support procurement processes by preparing technical specifications for RFPs, tenders, and quotation submissions
• Liaise with regulatory and governing authorities (e.g., Technical Standards and Safety Authority, Fire Department, MOL, Insurance representatives) to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards
• Monitor contractor and internal staff performance through inspections and quality assurance processes; initiate corrective actions where required
• Assist in developing and sustaining a proactive maintenance strategy focused on reducing reactive demand maintenance and strengthening preventive maintenance practices to optimize asset performance and resource utilization
• Monitor legislative and regulatory compliance requirements, prepare reports, and act as departmental liaison with regulatory authorities
• Support the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures in alignment with evolving legislation, codes, standards, and healthcare best practices
• Lead and coordinate plant emergency response activities to ensure continuity of critical hospital operations
• Promote and maintain a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors by investigating incidents and near misses, conducting debriefs, and implementing corrective measures
• Assume the responsibilities of Chief Fire Warden in the absence of the Facility Manager, including maintaining the Fire Safety Plan, overseeing Code Red procedures, and ensuring appropriate staff training
• Lead departmental quality improvement initiatives; collaborate with the Redevelopment Team on capital planning and project execution; and support ministry-funded projects as assigned
• Community College diploma in Facilities Management, Architectural Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related field (or equivalent).
• Certification in Facility Management (CFM) or equivalent designation preferred.
• Current WHMIS, MSDS, Type 2 (or higher) Asbestos Awareness training, and IPAC certification.
• Minimum five (5) years of facilities management experience, including at least three (3) years in a healthcare environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of infrastructure systems within an acute care hospital setting.
• Strong understanding of relevant legislation, codes, and standards (e.g., OBC, CSA, OHSA).
• Ability to travel between and work at multiple hospital sites, as required.

Hours: Currently days, 8 hours (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
Salary:
Minimum: $101,517.00
Maximum: $126,886.50
