Position Summary 

Under the direction of the Residential Shelter Director, this position plays a key role in supporting the daily operations of the YWCA’s Women In Jeopardy (WIJ) Program, which serves survivors of domestic violence. This role focuses on sustaining and strengthening the Shelter Advocate team to ensure consistent, compassionate, and trauma-informed services for residents. Responsibilities include coordinating and maintaining Shelter Advocate shift coverage, providing supervision, training, and ongoing support to the Coordinator and Lead team, and assisting staff in responding to resident crises. The position models and reinforces adherence to program policies, procedures, and best practices while promoting a trauma-informed and survivor-centered approach to care. This role also supports operational and administrative functions of the shelter program and serves as an active, collaborative member of both the WIJ program team and the broader YWCA organization. This position includes a 90-day evaluation period, after which performance will be reviewed.

 

Essential Job functions 

Maintain consistent shelter staffing coverage by managing schedules, coordinating coverage for absences, and supporting urgent staffing needs, including occasional after-hours call-outs. Track and monitor Relief Advocate hours to ensure accurate reporting. 

Provide Sanctuary-informed supervision and leadership to the Coordinator and Lead team through regular check-ins, guidance, and support to promote strong team functioning and a respectful workplace culture. 

Support staff in navigating complex or challenging situations, including interpersonal concerns, while fostering accountability, learning, and opportunities for debriefing that support trauma-informed care and staff wellness. 

In collaboration with the Residential Services Program Director and HR Manager, support the hiring, onboarding, and training of Shelter Advocates. Coordinate training schedules and ensure completion of required new hire and ongoing staff trainings in alignment with contractual requirements and best practices. 

Review residential logs and shift documentation to identify participant needs, safety concerns, and operational issues, ensuring timely follow-up and clear communication between shifts regarding participant well-being and community expectations. 

Promote trauma-informed, participant-centered service delivery and support staff in facilitating recommitment plan discussions and participant engagement in community standards. 

Ensure timely and accurate documentation in data systems, monitoring records to anticipate participant needs and support clear communication and task completion. 

In collaboration with the Shelter Program Director to review, update, and develop shelter policies, procedures, and protocols while ensuring ongoing compliance with YWCA Utah policies, licensing standards, and contractual requirements. 

Collaborate with the Shelter Program Director to reinforce Sanctuary-informed practices across shelter operations and advocate roles. 

Coordinate with the YWCA Operations team to ensure program needs are met, including facility maintenance, supplies, volunteers, donations, and IT support. 

Participate in the on-call shift rotation for 2 weeks every 10 weeks.

Ideal candidates will have the following: 

Welcoming & inclusive personality 

General knowledge of direct victim services, violence against women and sexual violence issues; gender and race equity, from a feminist perspective. 

Understanding of equity, anti-oppression and trauma-informed philosophies.  

 

 

Qualifications  

Minimum qualifications include a combined 9 or more years of education and experience: 

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in women’s studies, political science, public policy, communications, criminal justice, social work. MPA or related strongly preferred and 

Minimum 5 to 7 years of progressive professional experience in nonprofit sector fundraising. Proven record of accomplishment in generating significant revenue from public, private, and nonprofit sources, including supervisory experience and working with volunteer leadership. Knowledge of local corporate and foundation community strongly preferred.  

Or Associates degree from an accredited college plus 7 or more years’ experience. 

Or High school diploma plus 9 or more years of relevant demonstrated experience. 

An understanding of, and agreement with, YWCA Utah’s mission, values and philosophy regarding the elimination of racism, empowerment of women and commitment to anti-oppression work and social justice. 

Understanding and commitment to issues of cultural diversity and anti-racism. 

Ability to work scheduled hours on a regular basis, some weekends and evenings required. 

Proficiency with general office duties, computer systems and technology. 

Excellent writing, interpersonal communication, and public speaking skills. 

Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time, evaluate progress, and adjust activities to complete projects within established timeframe.  

Demonstrated experience functioning within multidisciplinary settings. 

Skilled in establishing effective working relationships.  

Ability to collaborate and invite collaboration. 

Able to demonstrate skills in effective communication, conflict resolution and problem solving. 

If driving on business, a valid Utah driver’s license, access to an automobile, and valid auto insurance required. 

Must be able to pass Department of Health and Human Services criminal background check and meet I-9 requirements.

 

Physical/Sensory Demands 

Work is generally performed in a safe and comfortable office environment.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:  sit for long periods of time; use computer to enter data; use telephone to converse with customers and employees; walk and stand for long periods of time; perform repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement.  Travel to attend conferences, training, outreach and other events occurs routinely.
