Traffic Control & Engineering is seeking an experienced and highly motivated professional to serve as Assistant Deputy Borough Engineer (ADBE). Under the direction of the Deputy Borough Engineer (DBE) and Borough Engineer, this role provides leadership in supervising technical staff, managing workflow and productivity, coordinating complex traffic engineering projects, and supporting the review of capital projects affecting borough operations. In this capacity, the ADBE assists the DBE in overseeing technical staff within the Manhattan Borough Engineering Office by monitoring workload, performance, and productivity; recommending and implementing process improvements; and coordinating assignments to ensure timely completion of work orders, studies, and project deliverables. The position also includes mentoring staff, supporting professional development, and fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing work environment. The role involves overseeing and coordinating traffic engineering projects, studies, and investigations, including analyzing transportation data, reviewing field surveys, and preparing or supervising technical reports and memoranda. Work orders are reviewed and approved for compliance with established plans, standards, and specifications, and field inspections or site evaluations are conducted or supervised as needed. A key component of the position is supporting the review and coordination of Capital Projects, Street Improvement Projects (SIPs), and Mayoral or Agency initiatives. This requires close collaboration with planning, engineering, and operations units to assess impacts on traffic control, signage, curb regulations, and street design, while providing technical feedback, tracking progress, and elevating issues to the DBE when necessary. The ADBE also supports efforts to improve traffic safety and mobility by helping assess the need for traffic control measures and devices, assisting with updates to traffic regulations when warranted, and contributing to borough-wide traffic studies and investigations. Tracking the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices is included among core responsibilities. As a liaison to other NYCDOT divisions, City and State agencies, contractors, community boards, and the public, the ADBE supports coordination on traffic policies, capital projects, and street operations, and assists in preparing written responses to correspondence and public inquiries. Administratively, the ADBE supports the DBE in monitoring workload and performance metrics related to assigned projects and staff, and performs related duties as assigned. The candidate will be expected to work collaboratively and inclusively, fostering professional growth and maintaining effective communication with all stakeholders.
