The role

The companies desk is looking for an assistant companies news editor to help lead the FT’s business coverage, with particular focus on the energy and natural resources sectors. This is a key position overseeing core FT stories at a time when unprecedented energy disruption is hitting companies, roiling markets and hurting economies.

This editor should be confident leading our coverage on everything from the business impact of the Iran war, to the struggles of the oil majors to adapt to energy transition, the scramble to secure supplies of rare earths and other critical minerals, the grid bottlenecks holding back renewables and the return of mega-M&A to the mining sector.

This person must be able to commission eye-catching stories and plan coverage, as well as being an accomplished copy editor who can give punch to news stories and make longer pieces shine.

Ideally, we are looking for an editor with the natural resources expertise and global experience to work with reporters on delivering scoops and devising high-impact analysis, visual and data pieces and other special projects. However, the role could pick up other sector responsibilities, depending on the successful candidate’s skills and experience.

The role would suit an experienced corporate reporter with a desire to move into editing or an editor with sector expertise in the relevant areas (and most likely some reporting experience).

This person would need to develop a close working relationship with the relevant reporters, both in London and in overseas offices, to manage workflow, chase news hard and produce distinctive, agenda-setting content.

Additional responsibilities include:

Ensuring the text of our stories sings and the non-text elements are compelling

Incorporating data and visual elements into corporate stories as standard

•
Conceiving, planning and commissioning special projects, including series, investigations and data or visually-led story-telling

•
Coordinating coverage and commissioning across sectors, including liaising with other London desks and teams overseas

•
Deputising for colleagues on other sectors where required, as well as helping with the smooth running of the companies coverage more generally

This news editor will be expected to work regular Sunday shifts, as part of the desk rota.

FT Newsroom staff are expected to work onsite a minimum of three days per week, subject to role requirements and regular review. While flexible working requests will be considered, not all patterns are suitable for Editorial roles.
