Quick Summary

The Assistant Borough Chief, Manhattan ICSU is responsible for supervising legal and support staff, ensuring high-quality practice, and advancing the mission of the Division.

Job Description

The Family Court Division seeks dynamic, enthusiastic, and strategic leaders with a clear vision for supporting staff, strengthening community partnerships, and promoting fair and effective outcomes for the children, families, and communities we serve. The Assistant Borough Chief reports directly to a Deputy Borough Chief and plays a key leadership role in supervising legal and support staff, ensuring high-quality practice, and advancing the mission of the Division. The position is available in both the juvenile justice and interstate child support units.

Responsibilities
- Supervise and train multiple attorneys in all aspects of their work both in and out of court.
- Provide legal, strategic, and procedural guidance to attorneys and support professionals.
- Conduct regular case reviews, transcript reviews, and courtroom observations.
- Review and edit written work, including petitions, supporting depositions, motions, and Memoranda of Law, Objections and Rebuttals.
- Maintain an active caseload.
- Assist Borough Chiefs with office initiatives, administrative duties, and development/implementation of borough and division-wide policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Develop and maintain relationships with community stakeholders; maintain a consistent presence in Community neighborhoods to address juvenile delinquency and support Interstate Child Support matters.
- Support the professional development of staff through training, mentoring, and constructive feedback.
- Present at staff meetings on legal issues, practice updates, and changes to statutes and caselaw.
- Attend and/or present external trainings to identify emerging issues in practice.
- Draft, review, and evaluate annual performance assessments; develop and monitor performance improvement plans when necessary.
- Represent the Division at interagency meetings and serve as liaison to city and statewide partners including, but not limited to, NYPD, the Department of Probation, ACS, DSS, HRA, and OTDA.

Schedule
Full-time; includes participation in a citywide rotation of night/weekend court assignments.

After the completion of orientation, attorneys hired by the Law Department will have the opportunity to elect to work from home under one of the following two programs. The first option allows attorneys to work remotely on a limited and irregular basis. The second option is a Citywide pilot program, which allows participants to select two set days to work from home each week. The two days will need to be approved by the attorney’s division and take into consideration the needs of the division, as the pilot program requires more than 50% staff coverage each day. In addition, if an attorney needs to appear in court, a client meeting or other in-person work related event on a set work from home day, they will need to attend to those in-person responsibilities and will not be able to work from home that day. Participants in the pilot program must set one work from home location where they will work remotely. This pilot program is currently being tested Citywide to determine its efficacy for City agencies and is not yet a permanent program.
