Responsibilities
Coordinate tasks according to priorities and plans
Produce daily schedules and monitor attendance of crew
Allocate general and daily responsibilities
Supervise and train workers and trades people
Ensure manpower and resources are adequate
Guarantee all safety precautions and quality standards are met
Supervise the use of machinery and equipment
Monitor daily purchases and ensure it remains within budget
Resolve problems when they arise
Report on progress to managers, engineers etc.
Coordinate Employee Activities: Foremen determine the priorities for work to be done, sometimes based on their own initiative and authority, but more often based on needs communicated by sales or management. They must determine whether they have the number of employees possessing the required skills for the job, verify that the needed items are available and direct employees on which tasks are to be completed first. If problems arise, the foreman may alter the schedule to minimize down time or assign workers to another section if necessary.
Handle Personnel Functions: Foremen may have significant input regarding new hires, discharges, raises or promotions. They may need to document their actions, such as writing a justification for firing a worker. The foreman is the timekeeper for his crew. Using T-Sheets, he needs to prepare consolidated time reports for payroll, approve time cards and correct hours worked in the database. The foreman also prepares performance reviews and provides input on to the managers
Act as Safety Coordinators: The foreman is expected to ensure that workers obey all safety regulations, whether they are statutory or specific to Proper Paving. The foreman is responsible for communicating safety procedures to employees and offering safety training to new workers, as well as inspecting the work environment and equipment to verify that no hazardous conditions exist. In the event of an accident, the foreman is the one who will prepare the preliminary incident report.
Other Duties: The foreman is responsible for tracking inventory and initiating requisitions for needed parts or supplies. The foreman must often prepare progress or production reports, schedule downtime for routine maintenance and provide estimates on production output. The foreman will perform initial quality inspections to ensure that work or production is progressing satisfactorily. The foreman is also the preliminary contact for work-related issues that employees may have, such as requests to take leave time or questions about promotions.
Skills and Qualifications:
Education/Experience
High School Diploma/GED
Advanced experience and at least 4 years working in the asphalt paving industry is a plus
Possess 4 years of management experience.
Licensing/Registrations
Preferred: OSHA Certification, CPR training, CDL
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to comprehend, retain, and communicate complex plans.
Verifiable leadership qualities.
Self-motivated and detail oriented.
Excellent written/oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Successful completion of pre-employment MVR, background and drug screen.
Knowledge of materials, equipment, methods and techniques used in road construction.
Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary.
Technology Use: Excel, Word, Google Earth, Google Maps
Ability to lift/carry on a regular basis at least 50-90lbs personally.
Ability to bend, crouch, stoop, and use hand tools.
Maintain constant alertness to the multiple activities on the job site including equipment, employees, and other traffic.
Constant physical effort including standing or walking for at least nine hours per day.
Job Duties
Supervision and participation in ensuring that work meets contract specifications while training and developing crews to produce high quality work and maximum productivity.
Supervision and participation in ensuring that all components of job completion are performing correctly and efficiently.
Ensure crews meet daily production goals while providing direction, training, and assistance.
Ensure all necessary equipment, employees, and materials are scheduled and arrive on time.
Proactively identify needs, problems, and opportunities.
Solve problems and/or submit timely communication of needs to management.
Ensure adherence to all federal, state, local and Proper Paving and environmental rules and regulations.
Inspect jobsites before, during, and after construction.
Ensure safety of crew and the public.
Assist in and direct barricade setup.
Maintain a positive and cooperative attitude, reliable attendance, and meet company standards.
Maintaining employee time and daily job costing.
Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, product quality, and crew performance.
