A look into the Applied Science team at Wolt

To build a better, bigger Wolt, we’re looking for two Applied Science Interns to join us for summer 2026 in Helsinki. If building tech and services that make cities better sounds like your cup of tea, let us tell you more about the opportunity. 🤩

Applied Science at Wolt sits at the intersection of machine learning engineering and applied data science. Our Applied Scientists build, deploy, and maintain production-grade AI and ML systems that power core parts of Wolt’s platform across 32 countries. 🌍

While Wolt also has Data Scientists focusing on experimentation and analytics, Applied Scientists focus on turning AI and ML ideas into reliable, scalable production systems, read more about that in our blog.

Applied Scientists are embedded in product development teams, working closely with Product Leads, Software Engineers, Designers, and Data Scientists. This allows deep focus on a specific product area while solving real business problems together.💪

In addition to the product team, Applied Scientists belong to a “home” Applied Science team, where we share knowledge, develop best practices, and support growth. The team has a dedicated lead who focuses on technical quality and personal development.

As an Applied Science intern, you’ll:

• Be embedded in a real product development team

• Have a senior Applied Scientist as your mentor, working with you day-to-day

• Learn how applied AI and machine learning is built and operated at scale 🚀

The program

The internship will last for up to 6 months and you can start in May.

During the internship, you’ll gain hands-on experience across the full lifecycle of applied machine learning and AI, from early ideation to maintaining models running in production. 🎓

🤓 Your daily work will include:

• Working closely with your mentor on applied science tasks within a product team

• Initially implementing well-scoped tasks and gradually taking on more ownership as you grow

• Collaborating with engineers, designers, data scientists, and product leads to translate product needs into AI and ML solutions

• Writing production-quality Python code and working with real-world, noisy, large-scale data

• Participating in model development, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement

You’ll mainly work with Python and SQL, and you’ll be exposed to our production ML ecosystem, such as:

Flyte, MLflow, Seldon Core, Snowflake, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, and other internal ML tooling.

No prior experience with this stack is required. You’ll learn the relevant tools on the job with support from your mentor and team. 🥳

What we offer

Six months paid internship program with a salary of 3300€ per month. Many of our colleagues have started their careers at Wolt through this program.

Qualifications

We’re looking for candidates with a strong interest in applied machine learning, AI, and production systems.

We value educational backgrounds such as:
Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, AI, Mathematics, Statistics, or similar fields.

From a technical perspective:

• Basic knowledge of Python and SQL through studies, projects, or internships

• Ability to read code and implement solutions with guidance

From a collaboration perspective:

• Enjoy working closely with others in a product development team

• Curiosity and willingness to ask questions and learn 🙌

As Wolt is an international company, our only language requirement is advanced English skills. We prefer candidates who are able to continue full-time after the internship period, so this is truly a chance for a career path. Today we have numerous members in different product teams who originally started as interns.🙏

Ideally, you’re based in Helsinki or nearby, so you can spend a few days a week at the office and work closely with your mentor and team members. We are unfortunately unable to offer relocation or visa support for internships, so you should be eligible for work in Finland for the duration of the program. If you’re offered to stay with us on a permanent basis after the internship, we’ll take care of your work visa if that’s needed.

To apply for the internship, you don't need to have extensive working experience — you can prove your skills by completing the assignment we have prepared for you!

👀 The process is easy:

1 - Open the assignment. Read through the assignment instructions carefully. When your solution is ready, put it as a zip file to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive (or similar). Remember to check permissions! If we cannot access the file, we cannot review your solution. Please don’t store your solution in a public GitHub repository during the application period.

2 - Click “Apply now”, fill in the form and attach a link to your assignment.

3 - Send your application.

Please note that the assignment is a mandatory part of the process. Applications without attached solutions won’t be accepted.

The deadline for the assignment is the 8th of February, Sunday (end of day Helsinki time). We’ll review the assignments and invite successful candidates for interviews within 3 weeks of the application deadline. If you have any questions, you can let us know via [email protected].

FAQ

Do I need to be based in Helsinki? Do you offer relocation support?

We have one of our tech hub in Helsinki and we would need you to be able to work at least partly from the office with your future internship mentor and other team members. This means commuting to the office every now and then for working together and for events. We don’t offer relocation and visa support for this specific program so you should be already in Finland, ideally in the Capital Region, with a valid work permit.

I can take care of the relocation part myself. Can I still apply?

Unfortunately, we will not consider your application if this is the case.

I want to apply; what happens after I send my application?

If you are selected for the first round of interviews, you will get an invite for the next step within 3 weeks after the application deadline. We will be in touch with each and every candidate who applied regardless of the outcome. The recruitment process includes the preliminary home assignment, technical interview, and a meeting with your possible team lead and mentor. We are aiming to make the decisions during February.

When is the exact deadline for the applications?

The deadline to apply is the 8th of February. Sunday, 23:59 Finnish time. However, to avoid additional stress during the application period, our advice is to apply ahead of the deadline and set aside some time to review your assignment solution with a fresh pair of eyes.

I missed the deadline; can I still apply through email?

Unfortunately, no. Please make sure to apply through our recruiting system by the 8th of February (end of day).

I'm a student/ fresh graduate. Can I apply?

We want to provide long-term career paths so we are looking for candidates who are able to continue with us after the internship full-time. Therefore, we are especially looking for graduated candidates but if you are at the very end of your studies and feel comfortable finishing those while working with us you are welcome!
