Job Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Introduction:

As an applied physicist, you will be part of the LHCb electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) upgrade project. This includes the optimisation, construction, commissioning and operation of novel modules for the inner region based on Spaghetti Calorimeter (SpaCal) technology.

Functions:

• Take a leading role in the enhancement of the LHCb ECAL during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) with new modules using SpaCal technology.
• Develop and participate hands-on in quality assurance activities for the ECAL LS3 enhancement.
• Optimise the signal shaping for the new SpaCal modules in collaboration with the electronics experts.
• Organise the test beam effort, including the data analysis, within the LHCb ECAL upgrade project and coordinate the test beam activities within the LHCb collaboration.
• Participate actively in the R&D on scintillating materials towards the LHCb PicoCal (LS4) and for future particle physics experiments.

PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Physics or a related field.

Experience:

• Proven track record in the field of optical calorimetry for particle physics experiments.
• Demonstrated experience in calorimeter detector tests, including data analysis from beam tests.
• Experience in simulations and optimisation of calorimeter detector designs.
• Demonstrated experience in characterisation of organic and inorganic scintillators.
• Understanding of signal treatment for optical calorimetry.
• Management and coordination of teams, including student supervision.

Technical competencies:

• Simulation, design and development of (parts of) detectors.
• Analysis and optimisation of detector performance.
• Knowledge and application of calorimetry methods and techniques.
• Organisation, planning and control: including supervision of students.

Behavioural competencies:

• Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
• Working in Teams: building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships.
• Managing Self: taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.
• Demonstrating Flexibility: readily absorbing new techniques and working practices; proposing new or improved ways of working.
• Demonstrating Accountability: presenting information accurately and objectively.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility and closing date:

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We welcome applications from all Member States and Associate Member States.

This vacancy will be filled as soon as possible, and applications should normally reach us no later than 15.02.2026 at 23:59 CET.

Working Hours: 40 hours per week

Job Flexibility: Hybrid

This position involves:

• Work in Radiation Areas.
• Interventions in underground installations.
• Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
• Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
• Stand-by duty, when required by the needs of the Organization.
• Exposure to lead.
• Exposure to risk of falling from heights during scaffolding assembly and dismantling operations.
• Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions.
• Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
