This position contributes to the wellbeing of Hamiltonians by managing and processing applications related to animal education and control, as well as trading in public places. Through this work, it supports public order, promotes responsible pet ownership, and encourages the safe and respectful use of shared spaces across the city.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic Applications Officer to join our team in the City Safety & Resilience Unit on a four-month fixed term, where your work will directly support the wellbeing of our community.

In this role, you’ll be helping to process applications for registrations, licences, permits, and certificates. You’ll be the friendly face (or voice) that customers interact with, ensuring their experience is smooth, positive, and efficient.

You’ll work closely with a wide range of internal teams—including Community Group, Customer Services, Information Services, and other applications teams—to make sure everything runs like clockwork. Collaboration is key here, and your ability to build strong relationships will help us deliver better outcomes for everyone.

Your day-to-day will involve:

• Handling new and renewal applications with accuracy and timeliness.
• Responding to customer queries and providing support that reflects our commitment to exceptional service.
• Entering and maintaining data in our regulatory systems and databases.
• Managing appointments for inspections, interviews, and customer meetings.
• Following up on overdue applications, processing invoices, and ensuring fee transactions align with Council policy.

• Sector Experience: Previous experience in local government or a similar regulatory environment, particularly in administration and customer service.
• Legislative Knowledge: Familiarity with the Dog Control Act, Litter Act, and relevant Council bylaws.
• Regulatory Interpretation: Confident in reading, interpreting, and applying legislation, regulations, and bylaws in day-to-day work.
• Time Management: Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
• Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication, with a clear and professional style.
• Relationship Building: Able to work well with people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds, maintaining positive and respectful relationships.
• Customer Service Excellence: Committed to delivering a high standard of service and making sound judgments based on customer needs.
