Specialist role Agile coach

Summary of the work 

Working with a small team to coach on use of agile project, programme and portfolio management for non digital projects. Working on a part time basis of roughly 1-2 days per month.

About The work

Who the specialist will work with 

You will be primarily working with our Change Management team and Research and Stakeholder Engagement team. Our change team are responsible for project, programme and portfolio assurance, along with business re-engineering and continuous improvement. They are a team of 9. Our Research and Stakeholder team conduct social and customer research and work with our partners and stakeholders. There will also be some work with the wider Strategy and Business Development Team.

What the specialist will work on 

Up skill junior team in agile project management. Up skill middle/ senior managers in agile portfolio and programme management. Coaching on specific agile tools and techniques and relating them to non digital projects. Guiding development of best practice tools for teams to use. Develop light weight learning products for succession and knowledge transfer.

Work setup

Address where the work will take place  Birmingham. West Midlands. 

Working arrangements 

We are looking for someone to work in the region of 11-12 days in total but split over the business year, so we can draw on to a mutually beneficial timetable. The reason for this is to allow the team to have specific coaching sessions and put works into practice before the follow up. Exact dates could be agreed following the successful process.

Skills and experience

Essential skills and experience 

• 3 years previous experience in agile coaching
• Demonstrable experience of coaching based on agile portfolio or programme management
• Understanding of Government Strategy
• Demonstrable experience of creating lasting change towards agile and lean ways of working for the better in an organisation
• Deep understanding of different agile and lean approaches and supporting context, such as behaviours, governance, process and culture across: portfolio management, programme and project team approaches
• Evidence of embedding agile tools and techniques and be able to use the most relevant tools and techniques as needed
• Understanding of agile governance for service design in line with the GDS principles
• Understanding of project and programme management techniques
• Evidence of working with non digital teams to work in agile ways

Nice-to-have skills and experience 

• Experience of working in central government
• Understanding of agile product and software development in line with the GDS service design manual and the enablers required to cultivate an agile organisation
• Broad experience of different industries, private and public, transactional digital services, redefining customer interaction and case studies of what good looks like
