We promote, protect, and advance First Nations’ Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession (OCAP®) principles, the inherent right to self-determination, and jurisdiction in research and information management. Through our Community Wellness & Engagement initiatives, we walk alongside Nations to support culturally grounded programming that reflects community priorities and lived experience.
Based in Maskwacîs, the successful candidate will coordinate and facilitate the Deadly Dads program under the guidance of the Community Research Associate. This role supports Cree fathers and fathers-to-be through culturally safe, strengths-based programming that integrates Cree teachings, Elders’ guidance, and trauma-informed practice.
What you might do in a day…
Coordinate and facilitate Deadly Dads gatherings, sharing circles, workshops, and land-based activities;
Create respectful, culturally safe spaces where fathers can connect, reflect, and grow;
Integrate Cree teachings, ceremony, and traditional practices in collaboration with Elders and Knowledge Keepers;
Build consistent, trusting relationships with fathers and fathers-to-be;
Support men navigating life transitions such as new parenthood, reunification, relationship changes, or reconnecting with children;
Identify strengths, set goals, and connect participants to community resources when additional supports are needed;
Maintain accurate participation records and documentation in alignment with FNIGC standards and OCAP® principles;
Participate in team meetings, planning sessions, and case consultations to ensure coordinated, wrap-around supports;
Prepare activity summaries, briefing notes, and reports as required;
Represent the program in community spaces and work collaboratively with service providers and leadership.
If you are…
Outgoing, gregarious, well-spoken and persuasive; comfortable interfacing with high-level key stakeholders (Chiefs, Councils, Health Directors, other Nation administrators);
Respectful, culturally grounded, and committed to uplifting Cree men and families;
Comfortable facilitating circles and group discussions, including conversations that may involve trauma, healing, or sensitive life experiences;
Skilled at building trust and maintaining appropriate professional boundaries;
Emotionally steady, resilient, and able to navigate complex family dynamics with compassion;
Knowledgeable about Cree teachings, community structures, and cultural protocols;
Adaptable and flexible, willing to work occasional evenings or weekends to align with community priorities; and
A positive, solution-oriented individual who believes in the strength and resilience of fathers.
And you have. . .
A Bachelor's degree (Master’s preferred) related to social sciences, project management or research;
A High School Diploma (post-secondary education in Social Work, Indigenous Studies, Human Services, Health Care or a related field is an asset);
Experience working with Indigenous men, fathers, families, or community-based programming;
Demonstrated knowledge of the Maskwacîs community context;
An understanding of trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches;
Familiarity with OCAP® principles and respect for data stewardship and confidentiality;
Strong communication, facilitation, and organisational skills;
Cree language fluency or familiarity (considered a strong asset); and
A valid Class 5 driver’s license and the ability to travel locally as required.
Lived experience, community leadership, and strong cultural grounding may be considered in lieu of formal education where appropriate.
This may be your dream job!
This may be your opportunity to walk alongside fathers as they strengthen their roles as caregivers, leaders, and protectors within their families and Nation.
Alberta FNIGC is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from candidates of all backgrounds. Preference will be given to qualified candidates who self-identify as Indigenous in accordance with the Canadian Human Rights Commission Aboriginal Employment Preference Policy.
