The Accounting Manager oversees the daily accounting operations of Burgess Civil, ensuring accurate job cost reporting, clean month‑end closes, strong internal controls, and compliance with construction‑specific requirements. This role is both hands-on and managerial, responsible for reviewing staff work while personally performing key accounting tasks.
Preferred Background:
We strongly prefer candidates with either:
Public accounting/audit experience (Big 4, regional, or heavy private client exposure), or
Direct construction industry accounting experience (job cost, WIP, equipment, pay apps).
This ensures the candidate brings either audit discipline and technical rigor or real-world construction accounting expertise.
Key Responsibilities
- Job Cost & Project Accounting
Ensure all job cost entries (labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors) are accurate and properly coded.
Review cost codes, budgets, committed costs, and change orders.
Assist with WIP, cost-to-complete analysis, and monthly job performance reviews.
Support Project Managers with timely, accurate cost reporting and variance explanations.
Maintain consistency and integrity of job structure within Foundation.
- Fixed Assets & Equipment Accounting
Manage capitalization, depreciation, disposals, and equipment cost allocations.
Reconcile equipment usage and tie-outs to telematics where applicable.
Maintain the equipment schedule for financial reporting and insurance purposes.
- General Ledger & Month-End Close
Lead monthly close, including reconciliations and journal entries.
Maintain the chart of accounts and oversee financial data accuracy.
Review and approve AP/AR entries posted by staff.
Prepare financial statements and management reporting for CFO review.
Support year-end audit with schedules, tie-outs, and documentation.
- Accounts Payable Oversight
Review AP batches for accuracy and approval compliance.
Execute and oversee AP check printing and payments.
Ensure vendor compliance: W‑9s, lien waivers, and insurance certificates.
Resolve invoice discrepancies promptly.
- Accounts Receivable Oversight
Review customer billings prepared by staff (T&M, unit price, AIA).
Validate alignment with contracts, schedules of values, and retention.
Monitor AR aging and support collection efforts as needed.
- Bank & Cash Management
Prepare and review bank reconciliations.
Monitor daily cash activity and assist with cash flow forecasting.
Maintain strong internal controls over cash disbursements.
- Payroll Review & Compliance
Review payroll batches for accurate labor/job coding.
Support workers’ comp audits and payroll reporting.
Maintain compliance with payroll-related regulations.
- Regulatory Compliance & Audit Support
Support workers’ comp audits, insurance renewals, and tax-related compliance.
Maintain documentation for external audit and internal control testing.
Assist in implementing process improvements and maintaining audit readiness.

Supervise AP, AR, Payroll, and Job Cost staff.
Provide training, performance feedback, and accountability.
Promote cross-training and workflow organization.
Drive a culture of accuracy, timeliness, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
Strong understanding of GAAP, reconciliations, and month-end close.
Strong Preference
Candidates with the following backgrounds will be prioritized:
Public accounting/audit experience (Big 4, regional, or similar), especially with job cost or construction clients.
Construction industry accounting experience, ideally in heavy civil, GC, subcontractor, or equipment-intensive operations.
Additional Skills
High proficiency in Excel and strong overall technical aptitude.
Technologically savvy and comfortable adopting new systems, automation tools, and AI‑assisted workflows.
Willing to serve as a thought leader in modernizing the accounting function, including evaluating new technologies, streamlining processes, and identifying opportunities for efficiency and accuracy.
Experience with Foundation Software (preferred) or other construction ERP systems.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
