Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000-square-mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14 Wastewater Resource Recovery Facilities, sludge dewatering facilities, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates, etc.), wastewater laboratories, and harbor vessels. The collection system includes 497 sewer regulators, 152 miles of intercepting sewers, 96 pumping systems, 3 CSO storage facilities, and 3 aeration facilities.
The Marine Sciences Section (MSS) is primarily responsible for staffing and performing the tasks necessary to complete the Harbor Survey sampling. These tasks include sample collection, analysis, and transport. They are performed either aboard DEP vessels or landside via DEP vehicles. MSS is also responsible for the QA/QC of the data collected by the Survey and for disseminating these data to the public.

The selected candidate for the Marine Sciences Section will be assigned the following tasks:

- Field work – With training, they can accompany MSS personnel in the field to perform our normal water-quality operations.
- Lab work – MSS processes some of our own samples, and an intern could easily be trained to perform this work.
- Data entry – There is always a need to input data into our database, especially during our busy summer months.
- Specific projects – On occasion, additional sampling is required, and the intern could be assigned to assist.
- Research – Always looking to keep current, so the intern could assist with researching literature.

In addition, the summer intern will develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony.
