The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (WSO) is responsible for the operation, maintenance and protection of the City's drinking water and wastewater collection (sewer) systems, the protection of adjacent waterways, and the development and protection of the Department's Capital Water and Sewer Design Program. The selected intern will work within the Water and Sewer Operations Capital Program on the Strategic Planning Team. The selected intern will assist in the development of a Capital Investment Plan (CIP) on BWSO assets and improve the quality of associated data and management systems within an ArcGIS environment. The selected intern will be identifying data deficiencies on project data, working with engineers to inform data entry needs, developing data QA/QC methodologies, and connecting various data sets needed to inform the CIP. Individuals should be proficient in Microsoft Office, with advanced Excel or Power Query skills strongly preferred, and should have a general understanding of ArcGIS software.
In addition, the summer intern will develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony.

As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
